Matteo Rosa: The Leaving

9 - 24 Mar, 2013
Private view: 9 Mar, 14 - 17

For his first solo exhibition in Norway, Italian-Swedish artist Matteo Rosa (b. 1978) has ventured deep into his own emotional universe, simultaneously tracing the psychographic roots of contemporary art.

Matteo Rosa is known for conceptually stringent post-minimalist installations, often combining meditative video-projections, photography and abstract drawings created through sensitive methods of chance, rather than using his hands. The exploration of consciousness and form, perception and time are underlying themes through all of his work.

Having previously always strived to remove the marks of hand and gesture in his works, recently Rosa took up watercolour as a medium of self-exploration and expression, investigating automatic drawing and accessing his own subconscious associations. The result of this experiment is a series of exquisitely contradictory watercolour drawings – delicate and violent, subtle and potently erotic, at times recalling similar attempts by Dada and the early surrealists.

Matteo Rosa graduated (BA) from Edinburgh College of Art in 2002 and (MA) Malmö Art Academy in 2005. He has exhibited widely and is represented in numerous public and private collections in Italy, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and the UK.
